Void (Kong Wang)

Kong Wang, the “void,” refers to the two branches in each ten-term decade of the sixty-term cycle that are necessarily left without a stem to pair with. A branch falling on void is traditionally read as weakened — what it governs tends to come to less than expected. This is not the same as bad. A void branch that is clashed or combined is often “filled in” and released; an unfavourable element falling void is welcome, and it is a favoured element falling void that warrants attention.

The Day Pillar necessarily sits inside its own decade and so can never be voided by it; its branch is therefore judged against the Year Pillar’s decade instead — the standard convention.

Void by pillar

Year: A void Year Pillar is traditionally read as a thin connection to ancestry and early foundations, or an unsettled childhood environment.

Month: A void Month Pillar is traditionally read as limited support from parents and siblings, and a young adulthood where direction keeps shifting and footing is hard to establish.

Day: A void Day Branch is traditionally called a “void spouse palace” — read as distance in relationships, time spent apart, or expectations that do not land.

Hour: A void Hour Pillar is traditionally read as a thinner bond with children, or a later life that runs quiet and in which wishes are not fully met.

When a luck cycle or annual year moves onto a void branch, that period is traditionally read as insubstantial — results are harder to bank. It favours holding and accumulating over large expansion.

Schools differ on how the void is derived. This tool takes the Day Pillar as primary and the Year Pillar as secondary, which is the most widely used convention; some lineages read only the Day Pillar, or compute the month and hour separately, and reach different results. The void is not in itself fortunate or unfortunate — read it against the whole chart.
