How BaZi Compatibility Is Read

A compatibility reading sets two BaZi charts side by side to see how the two people tend to relate. There are four common layers:

1. Zodiac signs (year branches)

The best-known part. Harmonising year branches (Six or Triple Harmony) suggest natural affinity and similar values; clashes, harms and punishments suggest different paces or temperaments. But everyone born in the same year shares a sign, so this only shows the broad picture.

2. Spouse palaces (day branches)

The branch of the day pillar is traditionally the spouse palace, showing how someone is in a close relationship. Harmonising day branches tend to get along; clashing ones rub over the details of daily life. Being more personal than the year branch, it traditionally carries more weight.

3. Day masters

The day stem is the person themselves. Day stems that combine (Jia–Ji, Yi–Geng, Bing–Xin, Ding–Ren, Wu–Gui) are traditionally drawn to each other; when one produces the other, that person tends to look after the other; when one controls the other, that person tends to dominate and respect matters more.

4. Complementary elements

From the strength of each day master, find the elements each person needs, then see how much of them the other's chart holds. When your partner supplies what you need, the relationship tends to feel supportive and easy.

Limits

Compatibility describes tendencies, not conclusions. Whether two people last depends on communication, respect, shared values and effort; no one should choose or give up a relationship because of a compatibility reading.
