The twelve stages of life

The twelve stages start from Birth at a palace set by the Five Element bureau and run forward for yang men and yin women, backward for yin men and yang women. They describe the rise and fall of each palace's momentum, from Birth and Bathing through to Conception and Nurture, in an endless cycle.

Birth
like a birth: vitality and growth.
Bathing
like a first bath: changeable and easily drawn in.
Capping
like coming of age: beginning to build an image.
Office
like taking office: growing capable and independent.
Peak
strength at its height.
Decline
past the peak: time to consolidate.
Sickness
strength waning: time to rest and adjust.
Death
momentum stops: time to lie low.
Tomb
storing away: saving and caution.
Extinction
an ending, waiting for a turn.
Conception
new beginnings taking shape.
Nurture
resting and gathering strength.

Life ruler and Body ruler

The Life ruler follows the branch of the Life palace and the Body ruler follows the birth-year branch. Traditionally they show the governing quality of a life and where effort goes later on; the chart lists them in its centre.
