Casting with Three Coins
The most common way to cast is the coin method: take three identical coins, focus on one specific question, and toss six times. Each toss gives one line; the first is the bottom line and the sixth is the top.
Traditionally heads count 3 and tails 2. Add the three coins:
- 6
- Old yin (three tails): a yin line that moves, marked ×, and becomes yang.
- 7
- Young yang: a yang line that stays.
- 8
- Young yin: a yin line that stays.
- 9
- Old yang (three heads): a yang line that moves, marked ○, and becomes yin.
Moving lines show the parts of the situation that are changing. Flip every moving line to get the changed hexagram, which shows where things are heading. With no moving lines the hexagram is "still" and is read on its own.
Ask something specific, one matter at a time, such as "How will next month's interview go?" rather than "What will my life be like?" Tradition advises against asking the same question again and again.
