The Use God and Its Strength

The use god is the line that stands for what you asked about. For money look at Wealth; for work, position or lawsuits, Officer; for exams, documents, property or elders, Parents; for children and juniors, Offspring; for friends and colleagues, Siblings. A man asking about love looks at Wealth and a woman at Officer; questions about yourself overall or your health look at the Self line.

Basic strength checks

Month

The branch of the month of the reading. The same element as the use god or one that produces it puts it in season and strong; one that controls it leaves it weak. A clash with the month is a "month break", the weakest state.

Day

The branch of the day. Support from the day strengthens the use god and control restrains it. When the day clashes a still line, a strong line is said to "secretly move", while a weak one is broken.

Void

From the ten-day cycle of the day pillar, two branches are void. A void use god is traditionally powerless for now or not yet ripe, to be read again when the void passes or is clashed.

Change

A moving line changes into another branch. If the new line produces the original, that is returning support; if it controls it, returning control. Moving one branch forward (such as Yin to Mao) is advancing, backward is retreating.
